Know what data you have, where it comes from and who may use it
Few organisations can say what data they hold or where it lives. Data governance gives you that inventory, and with it decisions you can defend and audits you can pass.
What you gain
Regulatory compliance
Answer audits with proper reporting and documentation, including the lineage of every figure, for BCBS 239, the ECB guide on risk data aggregation, DORA and the data governance duties of the EU AI Act.
Analytics people believe
Dashboards rest on data that has been checked. Errors are found and fixed quickly, before they reach a decision.
Privacy and security
Sensitive data is identified, tagged and protected by policy, which lowers the risk of a breach and of a damaged reputation.
A shared language
One set of definitions, so people across the organisation mean the same thing when they say customer, account or exposure.
Lower cost
You stop loading and storing low-value data, and bring in new sources in the order users need them.
Time back
People find the data they need in seconds with a searchable catalogue, instead of waiting weeks for another team.
Business and IT, working from the same catalogue
Data governance is a business initiative that only works when business and IT do it together. The business defines what data means and who may use it. IT makes those rules apply automatically, wherever the data is stored.
We set this up with IBM watsonx.data intelligence (formerly IBM Knowledge Catalog) on IBM Software Hub (formerly IBM Cloud Pak for Data):
- Discovery. New data sets are profiled and described automatically, so the catalogue fills up without months of manual work.
- A business glossary. Terms, owners and rules are defined once and linked to the actual data.
- Automated policies. Access rules and masking of sensitive fields are enforced by the platform, so a user who finds a data set also knows whether and how it may be used.
- Quality and lineage. Quality scores and the path of each data element are tracked from source to report.
Data lineage for risk reporting
Banks have to show how risk data is aggregated and reported, under the BCBS 239 principles and the ECB guide on risk data aggregation and risk reporting. We implement IBM Manta Data Lineage, now part of IBM watsonx.data intelligence, to map that path automatically across your databases, integration jobs and reports.
Safe data for testing and development
Test and development environments often hold full copies of production data. Nebula Data Masking, our own product, replaces the personal and sensitive values in those copies with realistic ones, so your teams keep working with data that behaves like the real thing.
Data models and catalogue with erwin
For a shared definition of your data, from the logical model to a catalogue the business can search, we also work with erwin Data Modeler and erwin Data Intelligence by Quest.
How we help
- Turn your data governance strategy into day-to-day practice
- Find the operating model that fits your organisation and culture
- Remove the usual obstacles to adoption
- Measure governance performance and its effect on the business
